The Browne Family Album

To Whom It May Concern,

The pictures in this album are scans of photos owned by Fred McCall, Baritone (Euphonium) who was at the 33d with me (Greg Browne) way back in the 1968-1970 era. To the best of my knowledge, NONE of them are copyrighted (c) or Published (p). If anyone knows of any which ARE, please contact me and I will remove them immediately (but sadly).

Fred acquired some of them (I'm not sure how many) from MSG James A. Taylor (Horn) who was our first Sergeant there.

As I scanned the pictures (and cleaned up some), I was able to recognize many faces including my own. They do bring back some fond memories. A few are just of the general Heidelberg area, but I include them because they are also excellent examples of the city at the time.

On one or two pictures, I did not recognize anyone, so they may have been from another time, or another duty station, but they have Jim Taylor in them, and they are relevant too.

I have these pictures in the following formats:
Photoshop6 - full scans, cleaned up and saved in Photoshop 6 .psd format,
JpgBig-HiQ - at the scanned size, whatever that may be,
Jpg1024-HiQ - saved in the 1024 x 768 size range, depending on proportions
  Jpg640-HiQ - saved in the 640 x 480 range, ditto
Jpg1024-MedQ - saved in the 1024 x 768 size range, depending on proportions
  Jpg640-MedQ - saved in the 640 x 480 range, ditto
(HiQ and MedQ refer to the quality setting used to save - i.e. Loss Compression Pct)

Anyone interested in these pictures can get a CD of ALL of them for the cost of duplication and postage (let's say $3 rounded for convenience). Just send me an e-mail (using the e-mail button on this website) and I'll let you know where to send the money.

I am including the e-mail Fred sent - because it has info about Jim Taylor and the pictures.

Hey Greg,

I just sent a bunch of pictures of the 1970 era of the 33rd to you by UPS. You should receive the package tomorrow, 2/1/02. Also a CD of a concert by the Navy School Of Music clinic band from Spring 1968. Some of our guys were playing on that concert, including our oboeist, me, and I think trumpet and clarinet players. Anyway, it's for you. The recording is ok for the time.

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you about Jim Taylor. He passed away on 11/1/97 from a stroke. I went to his funeral and spoke about him and our band and the era of 1969-1970. I got very emotional. Everyone there was intent on every word I said. His wife and children were very warm and open to me. I must have talked for 10-15 minutes. What a great guy he was.

I was fortunate to have performed with him in a German Band during Oktoberfest in So. Calif.(Yucaipa, near Redlands) in 1996, and visited with him and his wife, and was able to give him a tape of his concert with the 33rd from the Schwetzingen Schloss Garten when he was in charge between Edmonds leaving and Field arriving.

He seemed the same old Jim - calm easy going, and a great sense of humor. The tape is not bad for a little tape recorder from those days. The concert band and jazz band are on the tape. Anyway, I carried that tape around for 27 years( small reel to reel). I'm thankful that I was able to bring a little bit of the past to Jim, for him and for all of us, as we are all on that tape. I hope you enjoy the pictures. Were we really that young?!

Keep in touch.

Fred McCall.
